For 11 years, Sammi lived in her previous residence. One day, while still at that location, she placed a bag of trash outside her front door as she headed to the trash bin. After a brief absence, she returned to find a cat digging through the bag, evidently in search of food. Since she had indoor cats, she offered some of their food to the stray. From that moment on, he became a regular visitor, announcing his arrival with loud calls that could be heard from a distance. Eventually, Sammi was able to spend time with him and show him affection. He was wary of being approached from the front and would nip at anyone who tried, which led to his nickname, Nippy. However, he was more at ease when approached from the side or back. Although she longed to bring him into her home with her other cats, she understood that as an older feral cat, the transition might be too overwhelming for him.
In 2015, Sammi recognized the need to move to a new location. She chose a residence situated about a mile from her previous home. Concerned about Nippy's well-being, she resolved to bring him along. To facilitate this, she acquired a dog run and secured its top. This setup was placed at her new home. To acclimate Nippy, she trained him to eat from a Humane Live Animal Trap equipped with a secured trigger. As the moving day approached, she disengaged the trigger so that Nippy could be captured when he came to eat. Additionally, she set up a camera near the trap to monitor it through her phone. On the day of the move, just an hour after arriving at the new place, she checked her phone and was thrilled to see Nippy being captured live. Overjoyed, she quickly left to retrieve him and brought him to their new home.
He spent about a week and a half in the cage, during which he appeared to be acclimating well. He never attempted to escape, understanding that he would be fed and that other animals from the new environment would visit him. She considered it might be the right moment to set him free, believing he would remain nearby. Unfortunately, this decision proved to be a mistake. He left and did not return, leaving her devastated. She now realizes that keeping him in the cage for a longer duration would have been wiser.
When he first left, she continued to set out food in the hopes that he would return and eat. In the meantime, she realized there was a large group of feral cats nearby, which happily devoured the food she had left for Nippy.
The number of Ferals continued to expand.
